The concept of Higher order thinking skills (HOTS) is gaining reigning popularity amongst various stakeholders in education industry.

The phenomena of comprising HOTS as an integral and continuous form of learning require students to not only recall information but they also need to interpret and analyze the concept and apply it to situations and problems. Such questions promote creative thinking in students and challenges their critical thinking, analytical, and problem solving abilities.

Instead of emphasizing on repetition of activities, HOTS based learning focuses on synthesizing, analyzing, reasoning, comprehending, application, evaluation.

To enhance cognitive development of a student, The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has revised the design of question papers in all the major subjects of Classes XII and X to assess Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in children.

Teachers are now providing added attention to the development of evaluating and analytical skills rather than memorizing.

Thus, the new era of learning is to go beyond text books by branding the horizons of learners. Application-based questions largely discourages rote-learning by ensuring that students know how to use acquired knowledge in real-life scenarios.
