People often assume that the word ‘No’ showcases negativity and lack of confidence but People always underestimate the importance of saying no and you cannot always be saying ‘Yes’ to everything.

One individual questioned me, ”Vishwas, I’m afraid of saying NO to anything my seniors ask me. When I don’t deliver, I’m labeled as a bad performer. How to deal with this?’

Well, I have seen this problem with so many people. ‘Can you get this job done by this weekend?’ & the answer would be YES. Come Monday & the task would be incomplete. ‘Why then did you commit?’ There would be no concrete answer & as a result the entire team fails to complete a job. If you inform of any potential issues or possible slippages, they would mitigate the risk by other means. Bad news needs to be told first.

Be bold. Call spade a spade. At the same time, have a positive attitude & explore all possible ways of taking up opportunities. Because if you say ‘No’ to opportunities when in reality you can achieve them, you would be the biggest loser.

Bottom line, you are not a slave to always say YES. It’s okay to say NO, but give informed data points to base your decision. People will respect you. If you say YES & don’t deliver, you are not going to go too far in your career.

Communication is key.
