Google acquires Postini! It seems to be a perfect target but the price tag of $625 million is a little too much. Postini’s services — which include message security, archiving, encryption, and policy enforcement — can be used to protect a company’s email, instant messaging, and other web-based communications. This acquisition will enable Google to enhance security for Google Apps, Gmail, Calendar, Docs & Spreadsheets, etc.

Recently, in May, Google acquired GreenBorder. (Guess with GreenBorder, Google can even enter the Antivirus market..? You never know what Google can do!!!) Postini is a second security related acquisition for Google. These steps prove that Google is taking the hosted services area seriously. Security is critical when it comes to trusted hosted services.

Although it may not seem obvious that Google’s moves are a threat to Microsoft, a second look shows that Google is offering free services and apps on Internet that Microsoft charges for use on desktops. Is Microsoft sleeping? Let us wait and watch. The fight between Google, Yahoo and Microsoft is getting fierce and interesting by the day. Let us see who wins!

Cheers!
